Arkema, a leading French chemicals company with about 14,000 employees operating in 40+ countries, faced a major workstation upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows 7 and needed to ensure all applications continued to function with minimal administrative overhead. The company wanted to avoid unmanaged solutions like Windows XP Mode and prevent middleware conflicts (for example, running multiple Java versions), so it sought a cost‑effective way to virtualize applications in isolated “capsules” for reliable deployment.
After evaluating alternatives, Arkema chose Micro Focus Application Virtualization and worked with partner Soluprest to package key applications as .msi files for automated distribution. The solution enabled side‑by‑side operation of otherwise incompatible software (such as Office 2003 alongside newer Excel), sped up packaging and validation, eliminated uninstall-related issues, and is expected to save about 1,000 man‑hours per year as Arkema plans to virtualize 80–90% of its 400 applications.
