APRA AMCOS tunes up application performance to take on explosive growth in digital streaming market.

APRA AMCOS, the music rights organization representing over 100,000 songwriters and publishers in Australia and New Zealand, faced a technology bottleneck as streaming volumes exploded. Its core royalty‑calculation system is built on more than one million lines of COBOL code; as digital providers sent ever‑larger XML reports, the aging Solaris-based environment slowed to the point that monthly payment processing could take weeks, threatening scalability and on‑time payments.

APRA AMCOS migrated the COBOL estate to a Red Hat Linux platform using Micro Focus Visual COBOL, reusing the existing codebase and Sybase integration with minimal changes and going live within a week. Native code generation, multi‑threading and modern hardware delivered a roughly 200% performance boost and cut report processing from nine days to about 15 hours (≈93% improvement), restoring timely royalty payments and creating a scalable path to cloud and container deployment.
