AKDB - Customer Case Study

AKDB is a leading German public‑sector IT provider serving local authorities with solutions for finance, HR and e‑government, processing payroll for 420,000 employees. Facing pressure to digitize and respond faster to changing salaries, taxes and regulations, AKDB needed to modernize roughly 950,000 lines of COBOL on the mainframe to make HR applications easier to update and more agile.

Working with Micro Focus and PKS Software, AKDB rehosted its COBOL workload to Microsoft Windows using Micro Focus Enterprise Server for .NET, migrated its ADABAS/Natural data to Microsoft SQL Server, and moved development into Visual Studio with Enterprise Developer. The phased, low‑risk approach preserved decades of business logic while enabling COBOL/C# integration, boosting developer productivity, speeding updates, and delivering a stable platform to support more flexible, digital HR services.
