ABK Systeme harnesses the power of COBOL and Linux for a platform independent business payment transaction solution

ABK Systeme GmbH is the creator of E.F.I.S®, a leading euro‑area business payment platform used by more than 100 banks. Facing growing cross‑border transaction volumes and customer requests to move to Linux, ABK needed to migrate its COBOL-based applications to a platform‑independent, high‑performance solution that could reliably support domestic, European and global payment flows.

Working with Micro Focus and IBM, ABK used Micro Focus Studio to migrate its COBOL applications onto an IBM zSeries Linux‑only mainframe, consolidating multiple systems onto a single physical platform. The result is a scalable payment solution that can process 50 million domestic German transactions or over 500,000 SWIFT messages within six hours, while reducing maintenance, improving synchronization through virtual machines, and boosting operational efficiency.
