New York City Transit Authority Transforms Route Performance Using BIRT for Better Data Visualization and More Transparent Information

The New York City Transit Authority’s Operations Planning department, which manages scheduling for North America’s largest transit network, needed to turn millions of daily data points from buses, subways and vehicle sensors into timely, actionable insight. Existing Excel-based, siloed reporting was slow to distribute and update, so NYCT sought a cost-effective, scalable, self-service reporting platform that could connect to multiple sources (GTFS, GPS, vehicle diagnostics), work with MongoDB and Google Maps, and make data accessible to both staff and the public.

NYCT implemented Actuate BIRT, branded as ORCA, integrating MongoDB, Google Maps and real-time vehicle feeds to deliver interactive dashboards, mobile access and more than 80 automated reports. The platform improved visualization and transparency, sped troubleshooting and schedule adjustments, reduced passenger complaints, allowed a lean development team to support many more users, and produced measurable efficiency and cost savings.
