SunGard Securities Systems, a provider of securities processing, portfolio management and accounting solutions for banks, S&Ls and governments, needed a way to offer sophisticated portfolio accounting and analytics to community banks and thrifts without the high cost or dependency on Excel/Windows at the client. The challenge was delivering an easy, familiar spreadsheet-based interface over the web to diverse client platforms while keeping the service affordable and lightweight.

SunGard implemented Actuate’s e.Spreadsheet Java-based API to build servlets and applets that read/write Excel files and present a familiar spreadsheet UI in the browser, preserving most Excel functions and charts. The result was SunGard Correspondent Services: a pick-and-choose, web-hosted suite providing real-time reporting, risk management and analysis to small institutions with a small client footprint, faster development, cross‑platform deployment and cost-effective delivery of enterprise-grade analytics.
