A OpenText Analytics Case Study
Munich City Utilities (Stadtwerke München, SWM), Germany’s largest public utility, needed a flexible, interactive BI layer to complement SAP Business Warehouse so business users could create ad hoc reports and dashboards from multiple data sources without relying on IT. The platform also had to meet more than 100 technical criteria, including a Java focus, web-service interfaces, Firefox browser support and broad use of open source.
Actuate was deployed as the central BI solution: Actuate iServer for administration and distribution, BIRT Designer and Report Studio for report creation, BIRT Interactive Viewer for end-user customization, and the Actuate Mashboard for rapid dashboard assembly. The rollout enabled users to build and reuse reports and dashboards independently, reduced IT dependence, streamlined design reuse, and is being applied across IT monitoring, HR, sales, water databases and energy trading — with plans to add dynamic Excel output via Actuate e.Spreadsheets.
