A OpenStack Case Study

USER STORIES Why atmail chose OpenStack for email-as-a-service

atmail is an Australian email solutions provider serving service providers, telecoms, global corporations, and government agencies, and it needed a way to replace aging hardware across multiple data centers while improving cost efficiency, flexibility, security, performance, and scalability. To make the move with little or no customer impact, atmail turned to OpenStack and DreamHost Cloud as part of its email-as-a-service infrastructure.

OpenStack helped atmail migrate from bare metal to a virtualized, load-balanced, multi-node architecture, with automation via Ansible’s OpenStack module and in-house scripts supporting the transition. The result was more than 15% of atmail’s infrastructure powered by OpenStack, migration of several terabytes of data, and a platform designed to scale with future OpenStack services while keeping focus on the core email product.
