How JFE Steel Corporation forged an integrated data center with help from IBM Japan and OpenStack

JFE Steel Corporation, one of Japan’s largest steel makers, needed a more integrated and resilient data center to improve cost efficiency, scalability, and business continuity. Its existing operations lacked unified system management, creating inefficiencies and risk, so JFE turned to OpenStack and IBM Japan for an open source private cloud solution.

OpenStack was used to build J-OSCloud, an OpenStack-based private cloud that consolidated data center operations into two locations and automated provisioning across platforms. The result was a 28% expected IT cost reduction, CPU utilization improvements of 30–70%, and virtual machine release times cut from two weeks to three working days, helping JFE scale toward 500 virtual machines with better flexibility and availability.
