Building a Genomics Future with OpenStack

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research, home to one of the world’s five largest genome sequencing centres, needed a better way to support its growing genomics workload for more than 80 data scientists and bioinformaticians. Its DICE group turned to OpenStack to simplify infrastructure and create flexible environments for diverse projects, from large-scale Hadoop/Spark clusters to niche research setups.

Using OpenStack and tools like Kolla-Ansible, Garvan deployed multiple tailored environments on commodity hardware while keeping operations manageable for a small team. The result was faster, easier setup of compute and storage resources, reduced infrastructure burden, and the ability to maximize efficiency and support user needs with minimal resources.
