A OpenSensors Case Study
OpenSensors worked with a UK-Based Financial Institution that had recently moved into a new headquarters designed for agile working, but soon experienced pockets of very high desk utilisation, complaints about lack of space, and requests for more workspace. The Facilities Management team needed reliable data to understand how the office was actually being used, prove where pressure points existed, and support decisions around space capacity, desk sharing, and agile working policies.
OpenSensors installed more than 600 sensors across desks, alternative work areas, and collaborative zones, then overlaid the data onto floor plans and configured an analytics platform to track utilisation and occupancy in real time. This gave the team objective usage data by department and team, revealing that most employees still preferred working at their desks and highlighting optimisation opportunities, desk-sharing ratio adjustments, and policy changes to improve space use without needing additional real estate.
