Leading US Bank, a major and highly transactional financial institution, needed to accelerate its digital transformation after years of slow, costly mainframe modernization efforts. It wanted to expose core banking processes like payments, account opening, and consumer credit as APIs so it could improve customer and employee experiences while reducing complexity around its legacy mainframe environment. OpenLegacy’s API integration platform was selected to help solve this challenge.
OpenLegacy delivered a working prototype that exposed six real-world mainframe business flows as APIs in just two weeks, with one API created in under an hour. The solution bypassed layers of middleware by connecting directly to the mainframe, using OpenLegacy’s connector, COBOL parser, and automated API generator. As a result, the bank cut API development time from 1–2 months to less than an hour per flow, reduced deployment time from over a week to near-instant, lowered cost and technical complexity, and created a foundation for new digital products and services.
