Case Study: University of Wollongong builds a safer community with OpenLearning

The University of Wollongong (UOW) faced the challenge of addressing the prevalence of sexual assault and harassment in the community, particularly in licensed venues near its campuses. Following a national survey that revealed one in five students were sexually harassed in a university setting, UOW's Safe and Respectful Communities (SARC) team sought to create a training program to empower venue staff to identify, prevent, and respond to inappropriate behaviour. They partnered with the vendor OpenLearning to develop this initiative.

OpenLearning collaborated with UOW to develop the "Set The Bar" online training program. The solution was a flexible 60-90 minute course designed to foster an engaging, social learning experience where participants could share ideas and co-construct knowledge. The results were highly successful, attracting over 80 enrolments and scoring 92% in a post-course survey where respondents strongly agreed the training was important. The program's impact was recognized as it was named a finalist for a LearnX award and gained interest from state authorities for wider rollout.
