Transforming aged care through online modules, mentorship, and community support

The University of Wollongong (UOW) faced a critical shortage of skilled registered nurses in the aged care sector. To address this, they partnered with OpenLearning to develop the Gerontological Nursing Competencies Program. This initiative aimed to transform aged care into an attractive career path and bridge the gap between the high demand for qualified nurses and the available supply of resources.

OpenLearning provided the online learning platform and pedagogical approach for UOW's solution. The program utilized a blended model of synchronous workshops and asynchronous online modules, supported by a key mentorship component and community-building exercises. The measurable results include 219 graduates and a network of 52 mentors since its 2021 launch, with graduates advancing to leadership positions and the program being integrated into organizational onboarding processes.
