West Liberty University keeps the campus running with Umbrella by OpenDNS

West Liberty University, serving 2,800 students and 430 faculty and staff, needed a better way to protect campus users after a botnet infection exposed weaknesses in its legacy security appliance. The university turned to OpenDNS and its cloud-based security gateway, Umbrella, to secure online activity and prevent future malware and botnet issues.

OpenDNS implemented Umbrella as a replacement for the old appliance, using threat analytics to block attacks before they reached the network. According to the university, the solution eliminated the need for malware and botnet remediation, saving the network administrator zero time on cleanup and allowing IT to focus on supporting academic programs; James Clark said OpenDNS Umbrella “has paid for itself many times over.”
