Northern Powergrid, a UK electricity distribution network operator, faced the challenge of making its energy data easily accessible and understandable for a wide range of stakeholders to support decarbonization efforts. To meet a regulatory requirement and go beyond it, they partnered with vendor Opendatasoft to create an external data marketplace.

Opendatasoft's solution provided an intuitive data marketplace with interactive visualizations and tailored user pages for different stakeholders. This allowed for self-service access to critical data, such as network capacity maps. The results were significant, with the platform now averaging 4,000 monthly users, 143,000 monthly API calls, and 87 datasets. This self-service approach increased efficiency, reduced internal workload, and led to Northern Powergrid receiving its highest regulatory score for data provision.
