Vital Things Developed an Entire Engineering and Manufacturing Digital Design Flow Using OpenBOM Platform

Vital Things, a Norwegian company developing contactless medical sensors, faced the challenge of managing highly regulated and complex product designs. They needed a system to control all engineering and manufacturing data with strict revision control for their multi-disciplinary bills of materials (BOMs), which traditional large-scale ERP systems were too cumbersome to handle. They turned to the OpenBOM platform to find a solution.

OpenBOM provided the digital infrastructure to serve as the central hub for Vital Things' entire design flow. The solution managed hierarchical BOMs, integrated with Altium and Octopart, and featured unique capabilities like ZIP exports with all associated files. This implementation resulted in an estimated 80-90% time saving to incorporate changes, significantly fewer errors, and a major reduction in the number and processing time of engineering change orders (ECOs).
