Public Invention Uses OpenBOM™ To Manage Development of Open and Free VentMon To Help Developing Ventilators For Rural India and South America

Public Invention, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating open-source medical devices, needed a way to manage the development of its products, like the VentMon ventilator monitor, for manufacturing across diverse global regions like rural India and South America. Their challenge was to create a single, adaptable bill of materials that could be localized for different supply chains and manufacturing processes without any legal restrictions. They turned to the vendor OpenBOM for a solution.

OpenBOM provided a SaaS-based product data management platform that served as a single source of truth. The solution enabled Public Invention to standardize designs in Autodesk Fusion 360 and then easily adapt the BOMs to local regions, components, and vendors. This empowered local manufacturers in low and mid-income countries to produce the devices. Furthermore, OpenBOM helped the organization accurately track items, vendors, and expenses across its international teams, reducing waste and improving accountability for the non-profit.
