A OpenAirlines Case Study
Viva Aerobus, a leading ultra-low-cost carrier in Mexico, faced a significant challenge in its quest to become a greener airline. Despite creating a dedicated fuel efficiency department and a committee to oversee initiatives, the airline lacked the ability to measure the impact of its projects across dispatch, flight, and ground operations. This inability to quantify savings and performance hindered its ability to improve. To tackle this, Viva Aerobus turned to vendor OpenAirlines and its SkyBreathe® fuel management software to gain the necessary analytical capabilities.
OpenAirlines implemented its SkyBreathe® platform, a solution that uses AI and big data to analyze fuel consumption from multiple data sources. A key part of the solution was the SkyBreathe® MyFuelCoach mobile app, which was deployed to pilots to monitor their performance on green standard operating procedures. Following a thorough pilot trial and an extensive communication campaign, the implementation led to measurable improvements. For example, the Engine Out Taxi In initiative resulted in CO2 savings per flight doubling from 8.1kg to 16.2kg, demonstrating the tangible impact of the partnership with OpenAirlines.
