A Open iT Case Study
Open iT worked with a medium size oil and gas company that wanted to reduce the number of high-end UNIX workstations in its upstream department and lower the high costs charged by its IT service provider. The company needed a way to determine which users truly required dedicated workstations for productive work, since asking users, checking system activity, and reviewing software license check-outs did not clearly distinguish active use from inactive sessions.
Using Open iT software usage metering and reporting tools, the company measured actual application use on each computer and identified who really needed a workstation. With these metrics, Open iT helped the company reduce its workstations from 357 to 50 and cut costs by about 70%, while also supporting greener operations with less heat and noise in the office.
