Case Study: El Paso Pipeline Group reduces software maintenance costs with Open iT

A Open iT Case Study

Preview of the El Paso Pipeline Group Case Study

El Paso Reduces Annual M&S Costs each Year through IT Usage Visibility

El Paso Pipeline Group, the owner of the largest natural gas pipeline system in North America, needed better visibility into software usage as it worked to cut rising maintenance costs during an economic downturn. Its IT team, using FlexNet for license checkout management, lacked detailed data on actual usage and productivity, making it difficult to know when additional high-end engineering and geosciences software licenses were truly needed. Open iT helped address this with LicenseAnalyzer2020.

Open iT implemented LicenseAnalyzer2020 Level 1 and Level 3, integrating with FlexNet and other license servers to provide deeper analytics on checkout activity, duration of use, and productivity. The added visibility helped El Paso improve checkout and sharing practices, eliminate unnecessary purchases, and reduce maintenance and support costs; the company found that about half of its licenses were checked out but not actually in use. As a result, El Paso saved hundreds of thousands of dollars in the first year and continued to realize annual savings.
