Taking on Diversity & Inclusion in the Drupal Community

Drupal Diversity and Inclusion, an initiative to support underrepresented groups within the Drupal community, faced a significant challenge in sustaining its operations. They required financial independence to remain a critical and independent voice, but lacked a formal structure to manage sponsorships, process invoices, handle taxes, and maintain transparency for donors. This ad-hoc approach was unsustainable for funding even small projects and created barriers to receiving larger corporate sponsorships.

By adopting Open Collective, the initiative gained a transparent fiscal hosting platform. This solution from Open Collective provided the necessary structure to easily accept and manage funds, issue invoices, and handle tax compliance. As a result, Drupal Diversity and Inclusion was able to securely fund and launch significant projects like a speaker diversity training initiative and cover expenses for conference materials, moving from a purely volunteer-run effort to an organization capable of dreaming bigger.
