Igalia, a company dedicated to the advancement of the open web, faced the challenge of making browser feature development dependent on more than just the resources of major browser teams. To democratize this process, they used the infrastructure and services of Open Collective to launch their Open Prioritization project.
The solution implemented by Open Collective enabled Igalia to create a collective where companies and individuals could pool funds and guide the implementation of new web features. This successfully raised $75,000 in pledges, which was matched by Igalia, to implement the CSS feature `:focus-visible` in Safari. As a result, the feature is now present across all major browsers, and a second collective has been launched for MathML core support, demonstrating the model's repeatability and success.
