South Carolina County Uses CodeRED to Alert Residents Moments Before Dangerous Tornado Strikes

The County of Spartanburg, a South Carolina jurisdiction of about 300,000 people, faced the recurring threat of fast‑moving tornadoes that leave little time for residents to take shelter—most notably during the damaging October 2017 storms. To improve warning reach and speed, the county turned to OnSolve’s CodeRED Weather Warning application to rapidly notify residents in danger zones.

OnSolve’s CodeRED system—an opt‑in, phone‑based, geotargeted alert service—sends immediate warnings when the weather service issues a watch or warning. In 2017 many residents received alerts minutes before tornado touchdown, and county officials report no injuries or fatalities from the storm; several thousand people are now registered with CodeRED and sign‑ups continue to grow, demonstrating OnSolve’s measurable impact on public safety.
