Case Study: University of Ottawa achieves reliable, timely placenta collection with OnPage

A OnPage Case Study

How OnPage aids maternal health study as University of Ottawa

The University of Ottawa’s Dr. Kristi Adamo runs the PLACENTA study to identify early pregnancy markers of childhood obesity, but timely collection of placentas was critical—samples had to be secured within 30 minutes and the team previously lost 6 placentas (a $48,000 loss) when pagers failed. To solve this, the University of Ottawa adopted OnPage’s incident alert management system (the OnPage app) for fast, reliable clinical notifications.

OnPage implemented a workflow where the hospital calls a toll-free number to trigger an OnPage alert to researchers’ smartphones and uses OnPage’s digital on-call scheduling to route alerts to the person on duty; its loud, bypass-the-silent-switch notifications and ALERT-UNTIL-READ behavior ensured alerts were seen. As a result, OnPage enabled the team to never miss an alert or placenta again, maintain the 30-minute collection window, and restore the study’s viability.
