Case Study: IBE achieves secure collaborative document editing with ONLYOFFICE

How ONLYOFFICE and Nextcloud help the institute

IBE, the Institute for Medical Information Processing, Biometry, and Epidemiology at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, needed a secure alternative to SharePoint and Google Docs for collaborative work with sensitive medical research data. The institute wanted open-source, privacy-compliant tools that would support distributed teams and editing of DOCX and XLSX files, so it evaluated collaboration platforms including ONLYOFFICE.

ONLYOFFICE Docs, integrated with Nextcloud, was implemented to enable self-hosted document management, co-authoring, and research paper editing in a GDPR-friendly environment. According to IBE, ONLYOFFICE is faster and more compatible than alternatives, covers around 90% of their use cases, and supports collaborative editing sessions with up to 40 participants, helping employees move to secure cloud-based working and open-science practices.
