TIAA, the financial services organization, set out to transform its law department to meet growing demand, optimize outside‑counsel spend, and modernize legal operations. To enable a data‑driven, disciplined approach they adopted an integrated platform that included Onit (Onit Matter Management and Onit eBilling) alongside iManage and Tableau to centralize matter workflows, eBilling and reporting.
Using Onit as the workflow and eBilling backbone, TIAA standardized processes, added automation (Onit App Builder, bots) and analytics, and leveraged offshore/outsourcing where appropriate. The Onit‑enabled program delivered measurable benefits: clearer matter visibility and outside‑counsel control, faster reporting, and activity analysis that identified roughly 10 FTEs of effort‑reduction opportunity — freeing legal capacity for higher‑value work and reducing cost per matter.
