Case Study: JibJab achieves scalable AWS migration with Onica

A Onica Case Study

Preview of the JibJab Case Study

The Flexibility of AWS Brings Joy to JibJab

JibJab, the media and entertainment company behind personalized eCards and other digital entertainment products, needed to move an extremely large amount of data from its datacenter to AWS without affecting service availability. The project involved migrating more than 575 million files totaling 130 TB, remapping file names to a new database schema, and rebuilding its primary website around AWS best practices.

Onica designed a direct datacenter-to-Amazon S3 migration approach using multiple machines to process data in parallel, along with a custom AWS/Jenkins server to speed deployment. The resulting AWS environment used CloudFormation, Packer, and Chef, and was built to be self-healing and redundant across availability zones. With Onica’s help, JibJab successfully transitioned to AWS, gaining improved scalability, better peak-traffic handling, and stronger disaster recovery and resiliency.
