Creating better food at lower impact with AWS IoT

Local Roots Farms, a company building high-tech vertical indoor farms near distribution centers, wanted to improve food access and lower environmental impact while reducing the manual effort required to manage farm environments. To address this challenge, Local Roots Farms worked with Onica to design an AWS-based IoT solution using sensors and AWS Greengrass / AWS IoT Core for remote farm management.

Onica implemented an end-to-end IoT infrastructure with secure onboarding for new containers, data ingest APIs, and support for future machine learning use cases. The solution let one expert horticulturist manage multiple farm containers from the cloud instead of needing the equivalent of two full-time employees per farm, while also improving consistency, reducing downtime and crop loss, and enabling higher yields with less power and water.
