MedStar Health Chooses SafeNet Strong Authentication Solutions to Protect Access to Critical Hospital Applications

MedStar Health, a $5 billion non-profit healthcare system serving the Maryland–Washington region, needed to secure remote access to two critical medical applications that store records from more than 139,000 inpatient admissions and over 900,000 outpatient visits annually. To meet HIPAA and HITECH requirements while keeping authentication easy and portable for clinicians, MedStar selected Thales OneWelcome’s SafeNet eToken USB authenticator as its strong authentication solution.

Thales OneWelcome deployed the SafeNet eToken USB to more than 1,500 clinicians across seven MedStar-operated hospitals, requiring both a physical token and PIN to access sensitive patient data. The implementation provided two-factor authentication, simplified deployment with vendor support, and portable ease of use (token-sized like a house key), ensuring HIPAA/HITECH compliance and reducing costs tied to potential breaches and password management.
