Square Enix Introduces Two-factor Authentication In Online Games for the First Time in Japan

Square Enix, the Japanese entertainment company behind franchises like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, faced widespread account takeovers and hacking of its online games. To prevent fraud while meeting strict cost and battery-life requirements, Square Enix adopted OneSpan’s Digipass GO6 hardware tokens (and later OneSpan’s software tokens and Authentication Server Framework), marking the first introduction of OTP in Japan’s gaming industry.

By deploying OneSpan’s Digipass GO6 (seven‑year battery life), custom branded tokens, and an integrated authentication server, Square Enix rolled out OTP across about 100 online services — today supporting over one million logins per day and several hundred thousand users. OneSpan’s solution delivered an overwhelming decrease in fraud damages, lowered customer support costs, and significantly improved security awareness among gamers and the wider online game industry.
