SMBC deploys accessible voice OTP with OneSpan in 0 additional development

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), a major Japanese bank, faced the challenge of making its online banking services fully accessible to visually impaired customers who did not use smartphones. Their existing hardware token for generating one-time passwords (OTPs) relied on an LCD screen, which created a barrier for these users. To address this, SMBC partnered with vendor OneSpan to find a secure and convenient solution.

OneSpan provided its Digipass 302 Comfort Voice, an audio-capable hardware OTP device. This solution ran on SMBC's existing infrastructure, required no additional system development, and was operationally similar to their other tokens, enabling a fast and simple deployment. The implementation successfully improved the accessibility of SMBC's online banking services, allowing visually impaired customers to authenticate transactions securely and conveniently. OneSpan's solution met the bank's objective of offering a barrier-free service that everyone could use.
