MASS Design Group cuts embodied carbon 58% with One Click LCA

MASS Design Group, represented by Senior Principal Kelly Alvarez Doran, sought to push the boundaries of sustainable design and radically reduce the embodied carbon in its construction projects, such as the Rwandan Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA). The challenge was to design for climate positivity by moving away from carbon-intensive materials and opaque supply chains, requiring tools to help visualize and plan carbon-positive solutions. This led them to use the One Click LCA platform.

One Click LCA provided the tools necessary to assess carbon impact throughout the design process. The software’s extensive library and connection to Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) were particularly useful for investigating material options and understanding their provenance. As a result, MASS Design Group was able to design and implement the off-grid RICA campus, achieving a radically lower embodied carbon footprint that was 58% less than the regional status quo.
