A One Click LCA Case Study
High Speed Two (HS2) Limited, the UK government-backed company developing the new high-speed rail network, needed to assess and reduce the whole life carbon footprint of the HS2 London Euston Railway Station project at RIBA Stage 2. The challenge was to understand the carbon impact of a large new-build station design and support BREEAM New Construction requirements using an accurate life cycle assessment approach. One Click LCA was used alongside a BIM workflow to extract materials and quantities from the combined architectural and structural model.
Using One Click LCA’s Revit plugin and EN 15978 whole life carbon methodology, WSP and HS2 established a baseline carbon footprint over a 120-year design life and tested multiple design options against it. The analysis helped the project achieve a 14% reduction in whole life carbon emissions by the end of RIBA Stage 2 and supported the project’s target of at least BREEAM Excellent, while also earning 2 innovation credits under BREEAM New Construction 2014.
