University College London Hospital - Customer Case Study

University College London Hospital (UCLH), a major NHS academic health centre, was implementing a new electronic patient record (EPR) but faced a gap: the EPR could not reliably manage legacy unstructured data, pre‑hospital referrals or the many clinical documents and images generated in hospital (e.g., ECGs, consent forms, clinical photos). Initially reluctant to expand the project, leaders concluded an enterprise document management system was essential to deliver a complete, accessible patient record at the point of care.

UCLH selected Hyland’s OnBase and tightly integrated it with the Epic EPR, rolling out broad clinician engagement and workflow redesign alongside go‑live. The integration delivers document and image access in context of the patient record (so most staff don’t even realise they’re using a separate system), eliminated routine paper pulls and back‑scanning, improved outpatient and wound‑care workflows, enabled patients to submit photos remotely, and strengthened business continuity — giving clinicians faster, more complete information at the bedside.
