A home run for the fans: MLB gives millions a new consumer platform to cheer about

Major League Baseball (MLB), representing 30 clubs and millions of fans, needed to modernize and centralize its omni-channel consumer platform so fans could seamlessly access content across mobile, web, streaming and ballpark apps. With just nine months to deliver before Opening Day, MLB faced the dual challenges of migrating millions of users from an on‑prem database and ensuring the system could scale for massive traffic spikes.

MLB partnered with Okta to build a customer identity framework, migrate user accounts, and validate capacity (testing up to 138,000 authenticated requests per minute). The platform launched smoothly on Opening Day 2019, delivering a frictionless fan experience, stronger Zero Trust security, faster time to value, freed developer capacity, and an ongoing partnership to expand features and services.
