Technology in harmony: the story of Port Alberni

Port Alberni School District, a small public district on Vancouver Island with 12 schools and about 3,500 students, relied on a three-person IT team to support a growing mix of classroom technologies. The team faced persistent security and device-management challenges, needed students to share devices while still receiving personalized learning experiences, and wanted a manageable BYOD approach without adding staff or complexity.

The district implemented Intune for Education alongside Office 365, Azure Active Directory and School Data Sync to standardize device configuration, assign apps by user groups, and enable apps to “follow” students across devices. Deployment became fast and simple (Windows 10 via USB plus Intune enrollment), security and identity management improved, IT time spent on patches dropped, and students gained seamless access to classroom apps at school and home—freeing staff to focus more on teaching.
