The Metropolitan Police Service needed a fast, low‑cost way to provide temporary email to around 800 seconded officers supporting security for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. With tight budgets and an external system integrator managing the corporate mail system, the Met required a solution that could be provisioned and removed quickly without new on‑premises hardware or complex change requests.
The Met deployed Microsoft Office 365 with Exchange Online to deliver cloud-based mailboxes accessible over any internet connection and self‑administered by the Met IT team. This approach allowed rapid creation and expunging of accounts, avoided capital expenditure and SI changes, addressed data‑sovereignty/privacy concerns, and kept operational costs to a minimum.
