County Uses Technology to Save Millions of Dollars, Improve Services, and Empower Youth

Mecklenburg County, North Carolina (including Charlotte) needed to modernize IT to keep pace with rapid growth. A highly mobile workforce was losing time to travel and paper processes, devices were inconsistent and hard to manage, and the county wanted to expand technology training and career opportunities for youth while maintaining strict data-security and compliance requirements.

The county migrated 6,350 users to Office 365, rolled out Surface Pro tablets, moved intranet functions to SharePoint Online, and shifted disaster recovery and archival storage to Azure. These changes enabled secure, remote productivity and centralized management, produced an estimated $3.2M annual productivity gain in Youth & Family Services and about $500K/year in infrastructure savings, improved citizen services, and expanded youth programs through Microsoft YouthSpark and the Mayor’s Youth Employment initiative.
