Cancer Research Nonprofit Uses Technology to Raise More Funds and Save More Lives

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a nationwide nonprofit dedicated to eliminating cancer, but by 2012 its 11 regional divisions ran on fragmented IT systems that hindered fundraising, volunteer coordination (notably the Road To Recovery program), and mobile advocacy work. Disparate tools and processes made it hard to connect staff, volunteers, and donors quickly, limiting the organization’s ability to deliver services and respond on the go.

ACS consolidated its technology on Microsoft Office 365—including Exchange Online, Skype for Business, Office Online, and Yammer—migrating about 10,000 users and retiring Lotus Notes. The standardized platform saved roughly $1.5M annually, improved mobile productivity and real‑time communication, broke down internal silos, and enabled faster volunteer coordination and more donor dollars directed to research and patient services.
