A Odoo Case Study
The University of Coimbra in Portugal needed to bring its five campus stores into a formal ERP system after new legislation, but found proprietary point-of-sale and ERP licences and maintenance prohibitively expensive. Facing a mandate to integrate sales, inventory and customer data with existing systems, the university sought a cost-effective, flexible alternative.
They implemented Odoo (formerly OpenERP) with support from ThinkOpen, covering POS, customer, product, inventory and sales management and integrating data into their legacy ERP. ThinkOpen provided implementation and training so the university’s IT team can handle updates and adaptations; costs are projected to be about 30% lower in the first year and 70–75% lower over five to six years, while avoiding vendor lock-in and prompting interest from other public institutions.
