A Observable Case Study
Trase, a collaboration between the Stockholm Environment Institute and Global Canopy, publishes data on global agricultural commodity supply chains and their environmental impacts. As its visualizations and dashboards became more complex, the team needed a faster, more scalable, and less expensive way to create and update content than relying on external developers and a costly website workflow. They used Observable to prototype, build, and publish interactive visualizations.
With Observable, Trase moved its visualization work in-house and onto a collaborative notebook-based workflow, allowing its globally distributed team to work together in real time and republish updates directly from notebooks. The result was faster turnaround for publishing insights, significantly lower operating costs, and a major boost in productivity—enough that the team said it could produce work it “wasn’t even considering” before using Observable.
