The customer, Zoom, leverages AWS infrastructure globally and needed to identify the specific AWS data center location being used by its application to effectively monitor network performance for its users. This was crucial for troubleshooting issues and ensuring a stable experience on Zoom calls. The vendor, Obkio, provided guidance and its network performance monitoring solution to address this challenge.

Obkio's solution involved a process to pinpoint the exact AWS data center by having users create a Zoom meeting, perform DNS resolution on the meeting URL to get an IP address, and then cross-reference that IP with documented AWS IP ranges. This identified the hosting region, such as us-east-1 in North Virginia. With the data center location identified, Obkio's monitoring tool could then be used to monitor performance end-to-end, troubleshoot network problems like jitter and packet loss, and ultimately improve the Zoom user experience.
