Whittington Health NHS Trust - Customer Case Study

Whittington Health NHS Trust worked with Oasys Software using Oasys MassMotion to assess whether its Emergency Department could safely handle the expected winter 2020 surge in patients during the COVID-19 pandemic while maintaining social distancing. The trust needed a better understanding of waiting room capacity, crowding risks, and how different patient journeys and accompanying adults would affect flow.

Oasys Software built a detailed 3D pedestrian simulation using 89,000 patient data records, AutoCAD plans, and close-accompanying behaviour modelling to test multiple capacity scenarios. The analysis showed adult waiting area demand could exceed 250% of existing capacity, helping the trust identify interventions such as extra reception desks, limits on accompanying visitors, and overflow waiting space; this evidence supported a successful funding request to expand and redesign the waiting area.
