A Oasys Software Case Study
The University of Limerick, in collaboration with Arup, faced the engineering challenge of designing the 230-meter 'Living Bridge' to create a new pedestrian link across the river Shannon. To achieve an elegant and structurally sound design, they required sophisticated analysis software to model the complex interactions between the bridge's independent spans, tetrapod piers, and piled foundations. They utilized the Oasys Structural Suite, including Oasys GSA, for this project.
Oasys software proved invaluable for the solution. Oasys GSA was used for the global analysis to size structural members and determine the dynamic behavior of the bridge under pedestrian loading and wind. Oasys Alp modeled the piled foundations to calculate load-deflection characteristics, and Oasys AdSec was used to calculate section stiffnesses. This integrated modeling approach confirmed design assumptions and enabled the successful fabrication and installation of the bridge, described as an elegant demonstration of structural engineering.
