A Oasys Software Case Study
Stanhope & Mitsubishi Estate, along with their design team from Arup, faced the challenge of designing the distinctive 50-storey 8 Bishopsgate tower to be structurally efficient and holistically sustainable, aiming to reduce embodied carbon and optimize the building's unique form which includes a significant cantilever. The structural engineering team used Oasys GSA software for its powerful structural analysis and design capabilities to meet these ambitious goals.
The solution implemented with Oasys GSA involved creating a global analytical model to optimize the entire structure. This allowed the engineers to automate workflows, design for time-dependent behaviors, and significantly reduce steel tonnage. The use of Oasys GSA resulted in a 25% reduction in steel weight, saving approximately 5,000 tonnes of CO2. The software also enabled an innovative raft foundation that cut the number of piles from 89 to 28, saving a further 680 tonnes of CO2 and reducing construction time by six weeks, contributing to the project's BREEAM Outstanding accreditation.
