A Oasys Software Case Study
schlaich bergermann partner (sbp) faced the challenge of designing an S-shaped pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Bad Hersfeld, Germany, with low inherent damping that made it susceptible to vibrations from pedestrian traffic. The structural engineering firm used Oasys GSA software to perform a dynamic analysis to ensure the bridge would meet comfort criteria under various loading scenarios.
Using Oasys GSA, sbp modeled the bridge and conducted a harmonic analysis to predict accelerations. The results indicated that while normal traffic scenarios were acceptable, the bridge inauguration scenario would exceed comfort limits. Based on this Oasys analysis, provisions were made for future dampers. Post-construction measurements confirmed the model's accuracy and showed a significant increase in system damping, which successfully reduced vibrations and ensured maximum comfort was achieved.
