Resilient healthcare facility design and EDI engagement in higher education Innovative use of Oasys MassMotion at Brunel University London

Brunel University London used Oasys MassMotion to support a research initiative focused on making healthcare facilities more resilient in the wake of COVID-19. The university needed to explore how hospitals could expand surge capacity, reduce congestion, and better protect vulnerable patients, while also bringing inclusive design and equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) into higher education learning.

Oasys MassMotion was used to run agent-based pedestrian and epidemiological simulations in a virtual hospital setting, helping Brunel evaluate infection risk, patient and staff movement, and evacuation scenarios for patients with mobility issues. The work gave students hands-on experience with inclusive healthcare design and reinforced EDI in the curriculum. While the case study does not cite a numerical ROI, Oasys says the simulations improved understanding of safer, more efficient hospital layouts and helped validate evacuation strategies before costly real-world changes were made.
