Parametric bridge analysis using Oasys GSA A487 New Dyfi Bridge, North Wales

Arup used Oasys software to support the A487 New Dyfi Bridge project in North Wales, where the existing Pont-ar-Ddyfi bridge could not handle current traffic levels and was often closed during flood events. The challenge was to design a new 725m steel-concrete composite viaduct across the Dyfi River and flood plain while managing a complex structure and responding efficiently to design changes.

Using Oasys GSA alongside Grasshopper, Speckle, and GeometryGym, Arup built a parametric workflow to generate the BIM and global analysis models, automate section-property calculations, and update the design quickly as geometry and highway alignments changed. Oasys helped create a seamless analysis process that reduced duplication of effort and improved result extraction, and Arup said they are now adopting and refining this approach across other projects.
