M&G Real Estate streamlines Haymarket Edinburgh design with Oasys Software for 8-storey buildings

The customer, M&G Real Estate, faced significant structural engineering challenges on its Haymarket Edinburgh project. The site was highly constrained by two active Victorian railway tunnels running beneath it, which limited construction loading and required innovative design to maximize the building volume above them. To achieve a buildable and safe design, the engineering team at Arup collaborated with vendor Oasys Software, utilizing its suite of analysis tools including Oasys GSA.

Oasys Software's solutions were integral to the project's success. Oasys GSA provided a flexible global model for efficient load analysis and element design, while other specialized programs like Oasys Frew, Oasys Compos, and Oasys AdSec were used for pile sizing, composite beam checks, and complex concrete element design. This seamless software integration from Oasys allowed for innovative engineering solutions, such as inclined columns and a Vierendeel truss, which maximized floor area and minimized steel weight. The result was an efficient and sustainable design that overcame the site's complex constraints and earned commendations at the Structural Steel and Scottish IStructE Awards.
